This project was born with a curious inquiry: could AI generate moving poems without any human assistance? Could the resulting works be so convincing that they are indistinguishable from those composed by humans? The answer is yes. To create these pieces of art, GPT-3 was guided through three steps. First, titles and topics were imagined to set the scene. Then, an example of contemporary free verse poetry acted as guidance in writing the poem’s body. Finally, a satisfying conclusion was added to each piece. The artist then merged all elements together for a unique final result. So who planted this seed? Was it only the machine which wrote the poem itself or did both programmer and inspirational source play their part too? Again, yes – all three provided essential contributions!
